Advances in adaptive computer technology including speech software and the internet have opened a whole new world for visually impaired people, allowing them to have equal access to e-mail contact, Internet shopping and information as sighted people.
Thanks to your support, the GLFB has funded the Surrey Association for Visual Impairment (SAVI) to get specialised training and equipment out into the community, teaching clients the skills that they very much want to learn.
The training includes access to software and equipment best suited to an individual’s visual impairment needs.
‘The computer course gave me a feeling of real independence. I teach Braille, and therefore have to keep records, which I can now do electronically. SAVI also helped me apply for funding to allow me to buy my own laptop. My tutor was patient and really helpful with any queries I had, it was brilliant.’
IT training provides a whole new world of opportunities
