Sarah and Gillian are in their early teens. Whereas Sarah was born blind, Gillian was sighted until she was seven when she contracted meningitis.
Sarah’s parents did everything for her rather than encourage her to do things for herself, resulting in Sarah using her fingers rather than a knife and fork to eat meals and she was unable to cut or spread with a knife.
Each week the girls attend the Bromley Sight Centre, which is supported by the GLFB, where they are taught new techniques such as chopping, spreading, rolling and mixing. Gillian now makes her own sandwiches for school and Sarah has achieved a real breakthrough by slicing celery, apples and grapes safely and correctly while making a Waldorf salad.
Being together has also greatly boosted their confidence and they have become great friends and look forward to spending time together.
