Ellen: helping to heal the bereavement of sight loss

Ellen at workEllen at workEllen is a counsellor providing emotional support at the Croydon Voluntary Association for the Blind.

What makes Ellen so different is that she's blind. What makes her special is the way she faced up to the challenges, which her disability presented, and her determination to help others.

'I have a passionate conviction', says Ellen, 'that the blind and partially sighted need a specialist counselling service. Sight loss is like bereavement. The world a blind person knew and loved with all its visual beauty has been denied to them forever. Even the strongest person can be afraid and feel that life will never be the same again. I am privileged to be able to help blind people to feel positive and to realise that life is worth living'.

(Ellen Daniels has written a book 'Losing your sight' which is a compelling account of life without sight.)
