Katherine and Louise visit Clarity

We are the two newest members of the Fundraising team here at GLFB.  We are very excited to be part of the team, and we’ll both be posting regular articles to keep you updated on GLFB’s projects.

Last week we were lucky enough to visit one of our member charities, Clarity. We were very impressed with Clarity’s long history, particularly to learn that Dickens mentioned the General Welfare of the Blind (Clarity’s earlier inception) in an article ‘At Work in the Dark’, back in 1893! We got to tour the factory floor and also visit the lab in which new scents and products are developed- our noses were subjected to an array of aromas.

A question you might ask is how someone with limited vision can carry out the intricate tasks involved with producing soap products, so it was very inspiring to see employees using their other abilities and skills to replace their missing sight. The factory floor itself was buzzing as people went about their work, including cutting bars of soap, assembling packaging and taking notes of orders, and employees were chatting away as they worked hard which was great to see. We also got to meet some of the employees’ guide dogs, who are not only adorable and friendly but provide vital mobility support to several of the team.

One of the things that really stood out to us about Clarity is the way in which its employees are treated- some of those who work there have been there for over 20 years, while others use the service as a way into (or back into) mainstream employment. The organisation provides great opportunities for those with visual impairments, including I.T. training and the opportunity to do an NVQ.

It was great to meet some of the Clarity team, and our time perusing the selection of products certainly inspired some Christmas and birthday gift ideas. You can find out more about Clarity by clicking here: http://www.clarityefbp.org/
