Edith, who is 75 years old, is registered blind and also suffers from arthritis & cellulitis. Her husband, Gordon, who is also 75 years old, is registered blind and has a slight hearing impairment.
Together they manage very well helping each other out, but there are certain everyday tasks for which they need a pair of ' seeing eyes ' to help them. Thanks to home visitors from the Barnet branch of The Middlesex Association for the Blind they receive help with reading and writing letters, filling in forms and dealing with utility bills.
Gordon also finds that the labelling on tinned and jarred food presents a particular problem for him, and it is very useful to having a volunteer to assist him with identifying the content of the tins and jars which Gordon can then Braille-label. He laughs about the time when instead of spreading jam on toast it turned out to be horseradish sauce, which proved a bit of a shock!
