Eleven years ago Mary was diagnosed as having glaucoma in both eyes, shortly after
which she also became physically disabled. As if that wasn’t enough a year later Mary’s husband died
suddenly, the shock of which caused a stroke leaving her with even less vision.
Lonely and unable to walk very far Mary is now virtually housebound. Fortunately she was told about
the home visiting service covering her area. Paula, her Home Visitor, calls on her on regularly
and as well as providing friendship also looks after Mary’s correspondence, helps with sorting out the
payment of bills and with little jobs that need doing around the home.
‘Life can be so lonely’ says Mary. ‘Most of the time I just sit listening to talking books so I
really look forward to Paula’s visits because it’s terrible not having someone to talk to.’
With over 66% of visually impaired people over 75 living alone, it’s not surprising that Mary and
thousands like her depend upon the regular visits they receive from their Home Visitors.
