Real-Life Stories - Walter had always taken reading for granted

Walter

Walter has been a member of the National Library for the Blind (NLB) for quite a while having lost his sight over 10 years ago.

‘When it happened’, says Walter, ‘I was truly shocked by how difficult it was to access the same books and information as sighted people. Browsing in a bookshop and picking up the latest titles was a freedom I’d always taken for granted’.

‘The NLB is a lifeline to thousands like me. It means we can borrow books and continue our enjoyment of reading, but unfortunately the downside, due to money limitations, is that you can wait for up to a year for a more popular title and only one in every hundred books makes it into Braille’.

Like most of us, Walter truly treasures his ability to read and thanks to the NLB he still able to experience the pleasure that books bring to our lives.
