Janet’s dream of a happy retirement turned into a
nightmare when she lost her sight and her husband died shortly afterwards.
At first Janet went into a residential home where unfortunately the staff hadn’t
been trained in how to deal with the special needs of blind people.
Determined to regain her independence and to once again move into a home of her own,
Janet received training in mobility and rehabilitation skills, including how to cook
and use special equipment.
‘I was also taught how to use the long cane and gradually with the help of Richard,
my rehabilitation officer, my confidence increased to the point that I was able to walk
to the corner shop for my shopping. Now I even travel around by bus and it’s all thanks
to the wonderful help that I received’ says Janet.
