The Metropolitan Society for the Blind aims to alleviate the
social isolation of blind and partially sighted people in inner London and to help them live
independently in their own homes. The area served by the Society comprises 12 of London’s
Boroughs including Camden, Greenwich and Hackney.
The Metropolitan Society is largely reliant on funding from the GLFB and this money helps them
to provide the following services:
- home visiting and escort driver service offering friendship, support and practical help to those who want it;
regular visits are made to 700 people
- as an agent for the British Wireless for the Blind Fund,
they offer a radio service which aims to ensure that no registered blind or partially sighted person is without a radio
- one time grants for specific needs to visually impaired people who reside within their area
- hire and purchase of aids and equipment including writing and household aids, talking clocks and watches as
well as larger items i.e. the talking microwave oven
