Official opening of Sir John Mills House
On 30th November 2006 HRH The Countess of Wessex, Royal Patron of the Greater London Fund for the Blind,
performed the renaming ceremony of the Fund's offices. Sir John Mills House.
The renaming took place as a tribute to the late Sir John Mills CBE who in his capacity as a Vice
President of the GLFB did so much to help visually impaired people. He will long be remembered for
his kindness and his great determination to help others, who like him, had lost their sight. Even
in his final years, when he was suffering from ill health, he insisted on attending various events
including the annual visit to No 10 Downing Street to launch Geranium Day, because he realised the
good that would come from the public collections that followed.
Guests attending the ceremony included Hayley Mills, Lord Attenborough, Sir Donald Gosling and
Cherie Booth, together with other friends, supporters and people who are visually impaired people
and have received our support.

Geranium Day
Geranium Day is the Greater London Fund for the Blind's time-honoured flag day and is
launched annually by the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street, who makes the first
donation to the annual collection days which then starts the ball rolling!
We host two Geranium Days – the first in the City of London in April where collections and events
take place within the square mile and then a further collection across the metropolitan
area in May. They are always a great day with an excellent atmosphere not to be defeated
by the unpredictable British Spring time. We are always in need of volunteers for Geranium Day
so if you would like to help please contact
London Marathon
The London Marathon is the largest fundraising event in Britain and every year thousands
of people take on the challenge of running 26.2 miles around a scenic route of London.
It is always an amazing day with lots of spirited individuals taking part and a team of runners
representing the Greater London Fund for the Blind.
Our runners use Gold Bond places which guarantee them entry providing they are able
to raise a minimum of £1,500 on behalf of the GLFB. It’s a double challenge with training
and fundraising but an unforgettable experience.

Community Events
We are extremely lucky at the GLFB, as members of the community from all age ranges participate in
all types of community fundraising events. Whether it be sixth formers participating in house to
house fundraising or landladies hosting casino nights there are all manner small events going on all
over London.
Wacky ideas such as a sponsored bed push across London are the best way to get people interested or on the
slightly larger scale we have had volunteers participate in a sponsored jet pull! We have also hosted dragon
boat racing and an assault course.
Corporate Events
The GLFB are extremely proud of the corporate relationships that have been established over the years.
Not only are there the Legendary Dinners with Caspian Publishing and the Golf Days with Koch Metal,
but the GLFB was also the chosen charity for 2004 - 2005 for the law firm Berwin Leighton Paisner who
held many events including a London to Paris bike ride and tennis tournament to raise money for the Fund.
Employees at Arbuthnot Latham and the Portman Building society have also successfully raised money
to help the visually impaired in London. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our
corporate partners for helping us to achieve our fundraising targets.
