Special Projects

GLFB Special Projects Fund

As well as supporting our member charities, we also reserve a third of our income to give grants to other great organisations across London, which provide everyday help and support to the visually impaired.

Through these grants we can fund a variety of activities and you can find out how to apply at the bottom of the page.

The funding ranges from schemes to increase inclusion and to reach neglected and vulnerable groups, to providing sporting and recreational opportunities for all.

The guiding ethos of the fund is to seek those projects with the greatest impact and which have struggled to get funding from other sources.

In 2010/11 we distributed nearly £250,000 to a wide variety of projects in London, including:

Funding a new course for unemployed blind people to re-train and seek work.

Support workers and specialist eye clinics to help someone who has been told they are losing their sight.

A special holiday for disadvantaged and visually impaired children.

A photography training course for blind people run by Photo Voice

Grants in previous years include:

Action for Blind People to support their work in gaining employment for blind people through ICT training and employment preparation leading to their social inclusion and economic independence.

Association of Blind Asians for the co-ordination of services to the Asian Community that has enabled them to launch many much needed services.

Action Trust for the Blind for the purchase of a new Global Positioning System called a Victor Trekker, which is specially designed for blind and partially sighted people and uses GPS to help the user pinpoint where they are and guide them to specific locations, so greatly increasing their independence.

Extant to enable them to continue with their Youth Theatre Workshop Programmes which aim to enhance the drama teaching in schools by developing skills specifically for visually impaired young people.

National Talking Newspapers to help increase the number of subscribers who can receive 250 recorded publications which are despatched in tape, CD or electronic formats. ·

Royal London Society for the Blind to help with the running of their infants school for blind children and to establish a community IT training programme for adults.

Royal National Institute for the Blind for their Braille Modernisation project to enable the speedier production of Braille titles.
